Au Revoir

To recap: we had, long ago, been sent on a quest for the fabled Light of Heironeous, an artifact of good that had been stolen in the dim distant past. After much travel and the inevitablesad death of Neil the Paladin, we eventually came to the Abyss, wherein lay a fortress that held the LoH. However, the light appeared to have been corrupted; far from the clear white goodness we had expected, it was red and pulsating, and stifled our best attempts at healing magics, among others.

Maria was captured trying to scale the fortress from the front (for reasons best known to herself). The rest of us came to the bowels of the fortress and found a large crystal sphere, from whence the light emanated, but before we could pause to examine it we were interrupted by the fortress's guardian demons. Meyv was also captured early on, and the five of us who now remained - myself, Kanaye, Krug, Pip, and Cheleth - fought a pitched battle against several ferocious demons, including a terrible balor. With the aid of several huge earth elementals we eventually destroyed the balor, which exploded in an almighty burst of energy that slew poor Kanaye and badly injured the rest of us, but also drove off the remaining demons.

Knowing it would not be long before reinforcements returned, we promptly agreed on a plan: we would travel back to Delros through our portable portal with Kanaye's body, leaving my elementals with instructions to smash the crystal sphere (after our departure) and then attack any demons they could find. While we wanted to rescue Maria and Meyv, we simply weren't in any state to do so.

What problem can't be fixed by smashing an artifact? )
